Caring for the environment, people and society

For Molymet Belgium, sustainability is not a separate project, but an integral part of the way we work. From our site at North Sea Port, we work every day to build a future in which economic growth goes hand in hand with respect for people, the environment and society.

Our approach to sustainability is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and is reflected in concrete actions relating to energy, water, the circular economy, safety and local engagement. By continuously investing in innovation and improvement, we aim to reduce our impact whilst remaining a reliable partner for our customers, employees and the local community.

Responsible energy management

The energy transition also requires industrial companies to play an active role. That is why Molymet Belgium is strongly committed to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

At our site, we are invested in generating our own green energy. Solar panels on the warehouse roofs and our wind turbine, installed in collaboration with Luminus, together provide a significant proportion of our electricity requirements. In addition, we opt for green electricity, meaning our production runs on 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Furthermore, we continue to optimise our processes. Through our participation in the Flemish Energy Policy Agreement (EBO) and investments in areas such as relighting, electrification and process improvements, we are constantly increasing our energy efficiency.

Water- and emissions management

Water is a valuable resource. That is why we strive to use water efficiently in our production processes. More than 90% of the process water is recirculated internally, thereby minimising our water footprint.

We also invest continuously in modern technologies in the field of emissions management. Advanced gas scrubbers, improved dust filters and electrostatic dust removal systems ensure that emissions are strictly controlled. Through continuous monitoring, we closely track our performance and make adjustments where necessary.

In addition, we also seek sustainable solutions outside our production processes, such as the reuse of rainwater for sanitary purposes on site.

Circular economy

Circularity is ingrained in our business operations. We process molybdenum concentrates sourced from the copper industry, thereby adding value to raw materials released from existing mining activities.

Within our own processes, too, we strive to maximise the reuse of materials. By-products from other metal industries are used as reagents, whilst waste streams such as sulphur, slag and other by-products are put to good use once again.

Furthermore, the end products we manufacture contribute to the circular economy in their own right. After all, molybdenum can be recycled time and time again without any loss of quality, ensuring it remains a key raw material within a sustainable industrial chain.

People and society

For us, sustainability goes beyond the environment alone. The people who work at, around and with Molymet Belgium are also at the heart of what we do. We invest in a safe working environment in which employees can develop and grow: training, wellbeing, inclusion and diversity are key priorities in this regard.

In addition, we actively collaborate with schools and universities through work placements, final-year projects and the exchange of knowledge. In this way, we aim to contribute to the development of future technical talent.

We are also committed to open dialogue and collaboration in the community surrounding our site. We maintain contact with local stakeholders, public authorities and other relevant parties. Furthermore, by supporting local initiatives, social projects and charities, we aim to make a positive contribution to the region in which we operate.

Partner of Streekfonds Oost-Vlaanderen

As a partner of Streekfonds Oost-Vlaanderen, we contribute to projects that empower people, organisations and neighbourhoods in the region. Through this partnership, we support local initiatives that have a positive social impact. In this way, we translate our commitment to the local community into concrete actions and help to build a strong, connected region.

Charity BBQ

Twice a year, we organise a charity barbecue for and by our own colleagues. All proceeds go to a local community project or charity. These initiatives combine team spirit with solidarity and show how even small actions can make a big difference.

Certifications and sustainability

Our efforts in the areas of quality, safety, the environment and sustainability are underpinned by internationally recognised standards and independent assessments. These certifications confirm our commitment to continuous improvement and responsible business practices.
